<image:title>Works - Chasing Shadows - MAgical, driving & inspiring</image:title>
<image:caption>Commissioned by Pointeworks and premiered during the company’s New York City tour in March 2025, Chasing Shadows explores themes of connection, pursuit, and the beauty of fleeting moments. The work is structured around three distinct musical themes—one for each sister—that stand alone yet intertwine as the piece progresses. These themes take the audience on a journey, only to unexpectedly shift in surprising directions. The score moves from lyrical, flowing lines to fast, rhythmic passages, capturing Laine Habony’s (NYC Ballet Dancer) precise and energetic choreographic style. The title, Chasing Shadows, reflects the central theme of process. As Jenkins explains, "Like the elusive nature of one's own shadow, the work never fully resolves. Inspired by the idea of an ongoing search for something always just out of reach, Chasing Shadows suggests that satisfaction is often found not in the destination, but in the pursuit itself." Through expressive movement and evocative music, Chasing Shadows invites the audience into a world where artistry, collaboration, and discovery unfold in constant motion. <image:caption>The Weight of The World, originally commissioned for choreographer Laine Habony (NYC Ballet) for the Revolve Dance Project 2025, is a chamber work inspired by Liszt’s Funérailles. The piece moves through dark, smoky textures and haunting melodies, creating an atmosphere of mystery and unrest. It shifts between subtle dissonances, quiet emotive moments, and climactic bursts of passion and energy. The listener is taken on a journey through smoky, evocative soundscapes, reflecting both tension and release. Purchase Score & Parts</image:caption>

<image:title>Works - Hiraeth - the cosmic pull of wales’ nostalgia</image:title>
<image:caption>Hiraeth is an untranslatable Welsh word that blends homesickness, nostalgia, and a deep longing for one's homeland or something lost. It's often likened to the Portuguese word saudade, though the two are not quite the same. In Welsh, hir means "to long," and aeth conveys sorrow or grief. This word encapsulates the emotional pull that brings many people back to Wales after leaving—a phenomenon often cited as a reason for the country’s high rates of "back migration." I spent the first 18 years of my life in Pontypridd, South Wales, before moving to New York City. Ever since, I’ve been fascinated by people’s NYC stories. For many, the city has an almost gravitational force—something cosmic that keeps them from ever leaving, in a similar way that Wales pulls people back. Hiraeth explores the emotional and cultural intersection of the two places I call home: Wales and New York. It celebrates the contrast and connection between urban and rural landscapes. The piece blends energetic, disorienting rhythmic grooves that capture the chaos and thrill of NYC with expansive, hymn-like choral melodies inspired by Welsh brass bands and community choruses. While I’ll always be fueled by the boundless energy of New York, I carry with me the hiraeth for Wales—am byth. Score and Parts available on request.</image:caption>

<image:title>Works - A Solar Symphony - the wonder of our solar system, the power of the sun, the beauty of the natural world.</image:title>
<image:caption>A Solar Symphony is a celebration of light, energy, our planet, and the sun. The work is structured in four sections, guiding the listener on a journey from stillness to an epic, awe-inspiring finale. The first movement, titled Space. Time. A Near Perfect Vacuum, invites the audience to slowly enter the sound world. It evokes the stillness and silence of space, with a great sense of cosmic vertigo—the indescribable feeling of realizing our smallness when contemplating the vastness of space and time. The piece moves briskly into the second section, Celestial Bodies, inspired by the imagery of stars, comets, and galaxies. The music possesses a shimmering, glittering quality, with short motifs interwoven between wind instruments, creating a sense of perpetual motion. The third movement, A Celebration of Earth, is the most varied in mood. It begins with an expressive, organic-sounding cor anglais solo, paying homage to Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 (the work paired with A Solar Symphony at its premiere). The movement starts in a pastoral sound world, conjuring images of Stonehenge and the vast green landscape. It swells to a climactic orchestral tutti, celebrating the wonder of the Earth, only to abruptly diminish to tripleted strings, conveying a sense of urgency—perhaps a reminder of the planet’s fragile nature and our need to protect it. After dissonant, unsettling chords, these fade into the final fourth movement, The Solstice: The Longest, Brightest Light. This movement begins with a stillness, harkening back to the opening of the symphony, but this time featuring a wind quartet. It begins with a small, almost hazy sound that gradually reveals the brightest, purest light, as suspended chords and clusters unfold into a major tonality. The work has a “second ending,” where the first solstice sunset is depicted by a large orchestral tutti, which sounds final, but is followed by a coda section that revisits themes from throughout the work. After a moment of stillness, the symphony ends for a second time, this time with even more explosive orchestral colors, inspired by the kaleidoscopic sunsets I have witnessed living in New York City. <image:title>Works - Kaleidoscope - Vibrant, characterful & energetic</image:title>
<image:caption>Kaleidoscope is a work that highlights the broad and beautiful sounds a trumpet can create. Deeply influenced by jazz and blue-grass music, Jenkins creates her own spin on these genres, interweaving these sound worlds with her love of mixed-meter grooves and lyrical chorales inspired by her Welsh heritage. The piece experiments with senza misura cadenzas versus notated improvisations; bridging the gap between rhythmic freedom and structure. The result is an adventurous work that journeys through contrasting personalities and colors.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Healing Map is a composition that is part of a larger ongoing commissioning project for solo flute surrounding the experiences of PTSD and mental health. The project aims to destigmatize those living with PTSD and mental health disorders, and make the world a better place through musical healing. The conception of this project began shortly after the passing of Catherine’s 10-year trauma anniversary. In examining the long and arduous phases of healing, she started to explore what she could do to process and speak about these experiences. This multimedia, interdisciplinary set of compositions for solo flute and electronics will give composers and performers space to reflect on their mental health. The pieces, or movements, will eventually be linked together with poetry and visual arts.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As the pandemic continues to affect lives across the world, I found myself back in Wales, United Kingdom through the month of December 2021. I spent time reflecting on ways that the New York City energy has infiltrated into my music. Having grown up in Wales, a rural country with an abundance of beautiful green space, I often find myself in a cultural dichotomy where art provides a creative intersection between these two, contrasting environments. Collage is a musical exploration of these two places I have called home; flourishing, energetic passages are woven into long, relaxed, lyrical lines as tales are interspersed.</image:caption>

<image:title>Works - Ode to a Barren Land - Double Bass & Piano</image:title>
<image:caption>This hauntingly beautiful piece based on the poem, The Winter, by Welsh poet Dafydd Ap Gwilym represents the vast, bleak countryside of North Wales during the harshest season, Winter. The Winter by Dafydd Ap Gwilym Across North Wales The snowflakes wander, A swarm of white bees. Over the woods A cold veil lies. A load of chalk Bows down the trees. No undergrowth Without its wool, No field unsheeted; No path is left Through any field; On every stump White flour is milled. Will someone tell me What angels lift Planks in the flour-loft Floor of heaven Shaking down dust? An angel’s cloak Is cold quicksilver. And here below The big drifts blow, Blow and billow Across the heather Like swollen bellies. The frozen foam Falls in fleeces. Out of my house I will not stir For any girl To have my coat Look like a miller’s Or stuck with feathers Of eider down. What a great fall Lies on my country! A wide wall, stretching One sea to the other, Greater and graver Than the sea’s graveyard. When will rain come?</image:caption>

<image:caption>This three movement work for solo flute and piano shows the extremities of range and timbral contrasts between the instruments. Thanks to a commission from the EXPO: New Music Competition, I wrote this work for flutist Ji Young Kim. At the beginning of a very uncertain year, 2020, I was paired to live with Ji Young and our friendship fostered the music you will hear tonight. Her personality is lively and bubbly and the music is frantic and energetic to mirror this. As international students who could not travel home, Ji Young and I were there to catch each other on these drastic highs and lows. This piece highlights the importance of friendship through unstable, dark times, uncovering the promise that is on the horizon.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This piece follows the emotional arc of being trapped in quarantine. I’m sure we will never forget being stuck in shoe-box apartments in NYC and having to endure the repeated process of being stuck inside, unable to move freely. Rebellion captures the emotional dichotomy between feeling anxious and claustrophobic but also the idea of knowing we must do this for the health of others. The mood fluctuates between passages of hopeful space but quickly returns to relentless, furious fast music.</image:caption>

<image:title>Works - Monologue - feelings of loneliness & desire for self-expression</image:title>
<image:caption>This work, written for cellist Juliet Wolff, was conceived at the very beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. Suddenly separated from our musician colleagues, Juliet and I decided to collaborate on a boundary pushing, self- accompanied work for vocalizing cellist. I was inspired by the work of Latvian composer Peteris Vasks; in particular his marriage of the voice and cello. I explored this sound world and set out to find vowel sounds that best blended with the cello’s resonant quality; the result was that the voice acts as an extension of the cello and seemingly sounds like one unified, haunting but beautiful instrument. The title, ‘Monologue’ indicates that the music should sound as natural as speech. There are many flourishing, gestural episodes but equally, many moments of rest. Throughout the pandemic, I have been very aware of my own thoughts and after spending a considerable amount of time alone in quarantine, the musical ‘speech’ patterns represent the dichotomy between feelings of loneliness but also the desire for self-expression. <image:caption>Written for Bronwyn Schuman in 2021, this short piece for solo piano translates a very important message. Deeply inspired by the novel, ‘How Green is my Valley’ by Richard Llewellyn, Ms. Schuman requested a composition based on themes and elements from the book. As I dove deep into the story line, the character of Bronwyn fascinated me. Intelligent with boundless potential, instead Bronwyn follows the traditional pathway of becoming a wife. Whilst she tries to be content with this, the audience sees a glimmer of the sadness she feels as her future is taken away from her. Set in South Wales during the reign of Queen Victoria, married women were forced to live a life focused on bearing children and preparing food and the house for their family. They did not have the same rights as men to education. The piece portrays Bronwyn’s feelings after the wedding: gentle, hopeful and beautiful but with elements of melancholy, sadness and darkness. watch video</image:caption>

<image:title>Works - The Dawning - a calming, dark beginning</image:title>
<image:caption>The Dawning, originally commissioned by Rhose Studio Strings is a work of many characters. Having grown up in the beautiful green countryside of Wales (UK), I wanted to create a work that evokes the landscape of home. The result is a pastoral sound, in some ways reminiscent of Vaughan-Williams, the composer that brought Rhose Studio Strings together. The work weaves together folk-like melodies that move in parallel motion creating a sense of stillness and calm before slowly building to energetic, lilting passages. Having had the pleasure of living the past few years in New York City, I have absorbed huge influence from Jazz which encourages me to experiment with stacked, colourful chords. In some ways, this piece function as a concerto grosso as the tunes are passed around all of the voices; there is no hierarchy amongst the parts as everyone gets a moment to shine. The title, The Dawning, captures the feel of a calming, dark beginning, that grows like sunlight into the brightness of daytime.</image:caption>

The piece encourages young people to consider what they want the world to look like and how to shape it for the better. In a time where war, violence and injustice rages, “For Our Tomorrow” offers a more hopeful outlook on the possibilities posed by the next generation – most notably, reflection and change. This piece does not beg those in power to alter the world, but urges young people to recognise their agency and potential to make a difference.</image:caption>

Both melancholic and hopeful, this emotive work really highlights the need for gratitude for the little things in life. Remember by Christina Rossetti Remember me when I am gone away, Gone far away into the silent land; When you can no more hold me by the hand, Nor I half turn in to go yet turning stay. Remember me when no more day by day, You tell me of our future plann'd: Only remember me; you understand It will be late to counsel then or pray. If you forget me for a while After remember, do not grieve: A vestage of thoughts that once I had, Better by far you should forget and smile Than that you should remember and be sad.</image:caption>

<image:title>Works - Awakening - the pastoral sounds of wildlife</image:title>
<image:caption>"Awakening" is a musical tapestry that weaves together the rich and historical sound world of Wales and the vibrant energy of New York City; the two places I have called home. Commissioned by The Juilliard School for The Juilliard Orchestra’s opening concert of 2024-2025, this piece serves as a celebration of the excitement and anticipation of new beginnings. Growing up amidst the breathtaking landscapes of the South Wales Valleys, I drew on inspiration from the pastoral sounds of wildlife, the undulating hills, and the grandeur of ancient castles. These elements form the foundation of "Awakening," bringing a sense of nostalgia and longing for the familiar. There are sections reminiscent of distant brass bands echoing across the countryside, interwoven with the flowing melodies evocative of village mining choirs singing hymns of solidarity and resilience. Yet, amidst these pastoral scenes, the piece pulsates with the relentless energy and dynamism of urban life. The relentless energy of New York City is captured with fiery grooves, virtuosic solos and the sudden shifts in textures. Each section of the orchestra is prominently featured, contributing to the symphonic kaleidoscope that unfolds. "Awakening" is a celebration not only of Welsh culture and the vibrancy of New York City but also of the orchestra itself! <image:title>Works - Three Echoes - working with Alex Echo</image:title>
<image:caption>Many years ago, growing up as a child in Wales, I came across the work of Alex Echo. I still remember the day my parents were looking for an eye-catching piece of art that was full of color and energy but one that you could look at everyday and feel as though you are looking at it for the first time. They returned with an Alex Echo: it was one of the most colourful and captivating pieces of art I have ever seen, engraved with a special message for me after they told him that I was a composer. Alex was fascinated with music and spent countlesstimes in NYC ,sitting on the grass at Lincoln Center soaking up inspiration for his pieces, watching the students go in and out of The Juilliard building. He recently transitioned to digital art work and after putting together the series of images, Journa |BeingHere |and Portrait, these seemed like the most perfect collection of work to craft the concerto around. I was so lucky to be able to speak with Alex Echo over the past few months and I am so thrilled that he has been so supportive of this new collaborative partnership. Each of the movements captures Alex and I’s shared experience of the New York City energy. The paintings give the perfect opportunity to create more tumultuous textures in the first movement, time halting phrases in the second and a rapturous patchwork approach in the third. Alex's work is like an instant spark; you look at it and the ideas flow. It has been wonderful to partner with someone with such electric synergy.
